Lunches for the Homeless

The Sack Lunch Ministry provides nourishment to homeless and marginally housed people through Open Shelter. The Open Shelter is an advocacy and day services shelter on Parsons Avenue south of Children’s Hospital. Nearly 900 people were served at the Open Shelter in January 2024 alone and more than 250 of those were living on the streets without permanent shelter of any kind. The sack lunches we provide may be the only meal these people get that day.

Each week people from our church prepare sack lunches at home and bring them to the fellowship hall on Sunday morning, so the lunches can be delivered first thing on Monday to the Open Shelter. A single loaf of bread provides the foundation for ten lunches and is a simple way to bless those in need.

If you’d like to contribute to the Sack Lunch Ministry you can pick up lunch bags in the fellowship hall and prepare lunches containing the following items:

  • Peanut and Butter Sandwich
  • Bag of Chips
  • Applesauce cup
  • Apple, orange or other fruit
  • Juice Box or Water
  • Napkin
  • Spoon

A great way to get started is by preparing lunches for the fourth Sunday of each month. On that Sunday our church is the sole provider of lunches to the Open Shelter.

BRIEF PRAYER:

Great God, there are so many out there who have not only no place to sleep but nothing to eat. Help guide them to a place like a shelter or clothing and food pantry so that they might have something to fill their stomachs. I know that You will come to help those who are unable to help themselves and those who receive no help in the coming kingdom. Oh Lord, I look forward to the day when there will be no more pain, sorrow, suffering, death (Rev 21:4), and certainly hunger. Speed that day, my God, and for those who are hungry and lost, fill them with the Word of God and bring them everlasting life in Jesus’ name, I pray.
